The Award is open to any graduating high school senior entering their freshman year at an accredited, not-for-profit two- or four-year university, college or vocational/technical institute. Applicants must be actively engaged in running their own small business or employed by a small business for at least the past six months to be considered for this Award.

Students who progress to the semi-final round will be asked to complete a second essay.
